Why does oesophageal cancer cause persistent indigestion?

The oesophagus carries food from the throat to the stomach. A tumour can irritate its lining or reduce the space available for food to pass. This may feel like burning, pressure, discomfort behind the breastbone, or food seeming to stick. Changes in the valve between the oesophagus and stomach can also allow stomach contents to move upward and produce reflux-like symptoms.

Indigestion is common and may result from reflux, ulcers, medicines, infection, or food triggers. Persistent or changing symptoms deserve assessment because their pattern matters more than the label used to describe them.

Arrange a medical review when indigestion continues, returns frequently, or differs from your usual symptoms. Mention difficulty swallowing, painful swallowing, vomiting, reduced appetite, black stools, chest discomfort, or unplanned weight change. Keep track of meals, timing, medicines, and whether lying down worsens symptoms. Use only treatments that a pharmacist or clinician confirms are suitable.
