Why does norovirus infection cause vomiting?

Short answer
Norovirus infection can cause vomiting because irritation in the gut activates nerve signals that trigger the body's vomiting reflex.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First priority
- Replace fluids in small, frequent amounts.
- Infection control
- Handwashing and surface cleaning can reduce spread.
Why nausea and vomiting happen
Norovirus affects the digestive tract. Signals from the irritated gut travel to the brain and can produce nausea followed by vomiting. Diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, headache, and tiredness may accompany it, and fluid loss is the main short-term concern.
Vomiting is a very common presentation of Norovirus Infection. Vomiting also occurs with many other illnesses, medicines, pregnancy, migraine, and food-related problems, so it does not on its own reveal the cause.
Managing vomiting
After vomiting, wait until the wave of nausea settles, then try small, frequent sips of water or oral rehydration drink. Large drinks can be harder to keep down. Rest, and gradually reintroduce food when you feel able to eat.
Keep away from food preparation for others while you are unwell. Wash hands with soap and water after vomiting or using the toilet, and clean surfaces that may have been contaminated.
When to seek urgent advice
Get medical advice if vomiting prevents you from keeping fluids down, if urine becomes very dark or infrequent, or if dizziness, unusual sleepiness, or weakness develops. Seek urgent care for vomit containing blood, severe abdominal pain, a stiff neck, confusion, fainting, or severe breathing difficulty.
Questions for a clinician
Ask whether you have signs of dehydration, whether an anti-sickness medicine is appropriate for you, how to manage regular medicines while vomiting, and when you should be assessed in person.
