Why does non-small cell lung cancer cause persistent cough?

The airways contain sensitive lining and nerves that respond to irritation. A tumour near a bronchus may press on or narrow that passage, while nearby inflammation or mucus can further stimulate the cough reflex. If an airway is partly blocked, air and secretions may not move normally, which can change the sound or pattern of a cough. Some people also notice breathlessness, chest discomfort, hoarseness, or repeated chest infections.

Cough has many possible explanations, including viral illness, asthma, reflux, allergies, smoking-related irritation, and medicines. Its persistence, character, and accompanying symptoms help a clinician choose an examination or further testing.

Arrange a medical review for a cough that continues, changes, or keeps returning, especially if it affects sleep or activity. Note whether it is dry or brings up mucus, whether blood appears, and whether there is breathlessness, fever, pain, or hoarseness. Do not assume the cause from the cough alone.

Seek urgent help for coughing up blood, severe breathlessness, blue lips, chest pain, confusion, fainting, or a sudden worsening cough. These symptoms can require prompt assessment even when the eventual cause is not cancer.
