Why Does Neurofibroma Cause Skin Lumps?

A neurofibroma is a growth involving cells associated with a peripheral nerve and its supporting tissues. As these cells collect, they can create a bump in the skin, just below it, or along a deeper nerve. The lump may feel soft or rubbery and can sometimes sink inward when pressed. Some are smooth and dome-shaped, while others follow the path of a nerve and feel less distinct.

Neurofibromas may occur alone or alongside an inherited condition such as neurofibromatosis. A clinician may examine the number, distribution, colour and texture of lumps and ask about family history, pain or changes in sensation. A skin lump has many possible causes, so appearance alone cannot establish its identity.

Do not repeatedly squeeze or scratch a lump. Photograph it beside a familiar object and record its location, tenderness and any change in size or texture. Arrange a dermatology assessment for a new, persistent or uncertain lump. The clinician may use examination and, when needed, imaging or a tissue sample to clarify what it is. Stable lumps that cause no symptoms may only need monitoring; removal is considered when a lump is painful, catches on clothing or creates a functional or cosmetic concern.

Seek prompt medical review if a known lump grows quickly, becomes persistently painful, turns hard, develops new weakness or numbness, or changes suddenly. Urgent assessment is appropriate for severe pain with weakness, loss of movement or rapidly increasing swelling. These changes do not diagnose a serious problem, but they should not be ignored.

Ask whether the lump appears to involve a nerve, whether more than one lump needs assessment, and whether monitoring or testing is appropriate. Discuss pain control, removal methods, possible effects on nearby nerves and which changes should lead you to return sooner.
