Why does neuroblastoma cause abdominal swelling?

Neuroblastoma often begins in nerve tissue near the adrenal glands, which sit above the kidneys. As the tumour grows, it can occupy space behind or around abdominal organs. The tummy may look fuller, feel firm, or become uncomfortable. In some children, enlarged lymph nodes or fluid in the abdomen add to the swelling. Pressure can also reduce appetite or make a child feel full after eating only a small amount.

Swelling has many possible causes, including constipation, infection, or other non-cancerous conditions. Its appearance alone cannot identify the cause. A clinician may examine the abdomen and arrange imaging or other tests when the pattern calls for it.

Arrange a medical assessment if abdominal swelling persists, increases, or occurs with a new lump, poor appetite, vomiting, pain, weight change, or reduced energy. Note when it began, whether it changes during the day, and any bowel or urine changes. Do not press repeatedly on a tender area. Bring a list of medicines and recent symptoms to the appointment.
