Why does mumps cause swollen glands?

The swelling in mumps usually involves the parotid salivary glands, which sit in front of and below the ears. Inflammation makes the tissue enlarge and can make chewing, swallowing, or opening the mouth uncomfortable. Swollen glands are a common presentation of Mumps, and swelling may affect one side before the other or involve both sides. Other infections, dental problems, salivary stones, and lymph-node swelling can also cause a lump or facial swelling, so an assessment can clarify the cause.

Rest and drink enough fluids to keep your mouth moist. Soft foods may be more comfortable, and acidic foods or drinks can sting if salivary glands are sore. A cool or warm compress against the jaw can be soothing; use whichever feels more comfortable and protect the skin with a cloth. Take pain relief only as directed on the label or by a clinician. Arrange medical advice for diagnosis, and avoid kissing, close face-to-face contact, and sharing drinks or utensils while you may be contagious.

Seek urgent care for trouble breathing or swallowing, drooling because swallowing is difficult, severe dehydration, confusion, a stiff neck, or sudden severe testicular pain or swelling. Contact a clinician promptly if swelling becomes markedly red or hot, pain is severe, you develop a high fever, or you have a weakened immune system. Dental pain, pus in the mouth, or swelling mainly under the jaw can need a different assessment.

Ask whether the swollen area is a salivary gland or lymph node, whether testing is appropriate, and what symptoms would change the plan. Mention when swelling started, whether it is on one or both sides, recent dental symptoms, fever, rash, vaccination history, and close contacts who may have similar illness.
