Why can a multiple pregnancy cause morning sickness?

Pregnancy hormones affect the parts of the brain and digestive system involved in nausea. With twins or more, the body may be exposed to a greater hormonal signal, so nausea and vomiting can be more noticeable or last longer. Morning sickness can still vary widely between pregnancies. Nausea by itself cannot tell you how many babies there are; an ultrasound is used to confirm a multiple pregnancy.

Take small, frequent sips of fluid and try plain foods in small portions. Some people tolerate dry food before getting out of bed, cooler meals, or foods with less smell more easily. Rest when you can, and discuss pregnancy-safe medicines with your maternity clinician rather than starting a remedy on your own. Keep track of whether you can drink, pass urine, and keep food down.

Contact your maternity team promptly if vomiting prevents you from keeping fluids down, your urine becomes very dark or infrequent, you feel faint, or you are losing weight. Severe vomiting can cause dehydration and may need medical treatment. Seek urgent help if vomiting comes with severe abdominal pain, fever, blood, or confusion.
