Why does measles cause swollen glands?

Lymph nodes are small immune tissues found in areas such as the neck, behind the ears, under the jaw, armpits, and groin. During a viral illness, immune cells gather and multiply inside nearby nodes, which can make them tender or easier to feel. Swollen Glands is a common presentation of Measles. Measles may also cause fever, cough, red eyes, and a spreading rash, but swollen glands can occur with many other infections and conditions.

Phone a healthcare service for advice if measles is possible, rather than arriving without notice. This allows the service to arrange assessment while helping protect other patients. Encourage fluids and rest, and use age-appropriate fever relief only as advised by a clinician or pharmacist. Avoid squeezing or repeatedly pressing swollen nodes, because this can make tenderness worse. Note where the swelling is, whether it is changing, and any associated rash or fever.

Get urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, severe weakness, confusion, a seizure, a stiff neck, or inability to drink. Prompt assessment is also needed if swelling becomes rapidly larger, the skin over it becomes very red or hot, there is severe pain, or the person appears significantly unwell.

Ask whether the pattern of symptoms suggests measles, how long the nodes should be monitored, and what infection-control steps are needed at home. Share any recent exposures, travel, vaccinations, medicines, and changes in the rash or temperature.
