Why does measles cause fever?

After the measles virus enters the body, immune cells recognise infection and release chemical messengers. These act on the brain's temperature-control centre, making the body conserve and generate more heat. Fever is a very common presentation of Measles. The illness can also bring tiredness, cough, a runny nose, red eyes, and later a rash. Fever by itself has many causes and does not identify the cause without clinical assessment.

If measles is suspected, call a healthcare service before attending so staff can reduce exposure to other patients. Rest, offer regular fluids, and follow advice about fever medicines that are appropriate for the person's age and health. Keep the person away from people who may be vulnerable to infection, including infants, pregnant people, and those with a weakened immune system. A clinician can advise about testing, monitoring, and infection-control arrangements.

Arrange urgent medical assessment for difficulty breathing, marked drowsiness, confusion, a stiff neck, a seizure, inability to keep fluids down, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine. Seek prompt advice for a child who seems much more unwell, or for fever that is accompanied by a rapidly worsening condition.
