Why does mastitis cause fever after birth?

Fever After Birth is a common presentation of Mastitis. Swelling and milk-flow problems can irritate breast tissue; immune cells then release signals that may raise body temperature and cause chills, tiredness, or aches. A warm, tender, reddened area on one breast may occur alongside the fever. Fever after birth can also have other causes, including infection elsewhere, so the breast symptoms and the timing matter.

Continue feeding or expressing milk as comfortably as you can, because regular milk removal may reduce pressure. Check that the baby's latch is comfortable, vary feeding positions, rest, drink fluids, and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for swelling. Avoid forceful massage or excessive pumping, which can worsen inflammation. A clinician can assess whether medicine is needed and whether another cause of fever should be considered.

Contact a healthcare professional promptly if fever is high or persistent, breast redness is spreading, pain is worsening, you feel faint or very unwell, or symptoms do not start improving with supportive care. Seek urgent help for confusion, trouble breathing, severe weakness, or inability to keep fluids down. After birth, fever deserves assessment when it is not clearly settling, because uterine, urinary, wound, or breast infections can overlap.
