Why does mastitis cause breast skin changes?

Breast Skin Changes is a common presentation of Mastitis. Inflamed tissue can make the skin look red or flushed, feel warmer than the surrounding area and appear swollen or tight. A wedge-shaped area may be tender, and the skin can look stretched. These findings may accompany pain, a firm patch or fever. Skin changes have several possible causes, so their appearance does not by itself confirm mastitis.

Rest and use a cool compress to ease swelling. If you are breastfeeding, feed or express according to comfort and avoid deep massage or excessive pumping, which can further irritate tissue. Wear a supportive, non-tight bra and ask a clinician about suitable pain relief. Arrange assessment if the area is not settling or if you develop systemic symptoms.

Contact a clinician promptly for spreading redness, fever, worsening tenderness, pus, a new persistent lump or skin that remains changed after inflammation settles. Urgent care is appropriate if severe pain, faintness or marked illness develops. A painful fluid collection may require drainage and cannot be safely judged from skin appearance alone.

Ask whether the skin findings suggest inflammatory or infectious mastitis, how to monitor the area, and which symptoms require a review. Ask when imaging or treatment is needed if redness, swelling or a lump persists.
