Why does lymphoma cause unexplained weight loss?

Lymphoma is a cancer of lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell. The immune response around lymphoma may release chemical signals that influence hunger, muscle use and energy expenditure. Enlarged lymph nodes or disease in the abdomen can also cause early fullness, nausea or discomfort, making meals harder to finish. Fever, night sweats and tiredness may further reduce appetite and daily activity.

Weight loss can occur with many conditions, including infections, digestive disorders, thyroid problems and other cancers. The symptom alone cannot identify its cause. A clinician considers the amount and pattern of change alongside examination findings and other symptoms.
