Why does lymphoma cause unexplained fever?

Unexplained Fever is a common presentation of Lymphoma. Abnormal lymph cells can interact with the immune system and prompt the release of chemical messengers. These messengers may alter temperature control, causing a fever or episodes of feeling hot and chilled. Fever can occur alongside sweating, tiredness, reduced appetite, or enlarged lymph nodes.

Fever has many other possible causes, especially infections and inflammatory conditions. A fever without an obvious explanation does not establish lymphoma. The pattern, associated symptoms, recent exposures, medicines, and examination findings help a clinician decide what to investigate.

Contact a clinician when fever keeps returning, lasts longer than expected, or occurs with swollen nodes, drenching night sweats, persistent fatigue, or unintentional weight loss. Record temperature readings, timing, chills, medicines, recent travel, sick contacts, and other symptoms. Do not start leftover antibiotics, because they may mask symptoms without treating the underlying cause.

Seek urgent medical help for fever with confusion, severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, a stiff neck, severe weakness, or inability to keep fluids down. If you have a weakened immune system or are receiving cancer treatment, ask your care team what fever threshold requires immediate contact.

Ask what causes are being considered and whether you need an examination, blood tests, imaging, or infection testing. Ask how to record your temperature, which medicines are suitable for you, and exactly when to contact the clinic or emergency service.
