Why does lymphoma cause swollen lymph nodes?

Swollen Lymph Nodes is a very common presentation of Lymphoma. Lymph nodes are part of the immune system and are found in groups throughout the body. Lymphoma starts in lymphocytes, and abnormal cells may build up within a node or affect nearby nodes. This can produce a visible or palpable swelling, sometimes without pain.

Swollen nodes also commonly occur when the immune system responds to an infection or inflammation. Their size, tenderness, mobility, location, and duration provide clues but do not diagnose the cause. A clinician may check several node groups and look for symptoms outside the swollen area.

Arrange an appointment for nodes that persist, enlarge, feel hard or fixed, or appear without a clear recent illness. Note where the swelling is, when it began, whether it is changing, and whether you have fever, night sweats, fatigue, or weight loss. Avoid repeatedly pressing the nodes, which can make them sore.

Seek prompt medical advice if swelling occurs in several areas, does not settle, or comes with unexplained fever, drenching night sweats, marked fatigue, or unintentional weight loss. Get urgent help for breathing or swallowing difficulty, severe illness, or rapidly increasing swelling.

Ask whether the swollen nodes have features that suggest infection, inflammation, or another cause. Ask whether blood tests, imaging, or a biopsy is appropriate, how results will be explained, and what changes should lead to an earlier review.
