Why does lymphoedema cause arm or leg swelling?

Arm or Leg Swelling is a very common presentation of Lymphoedema. The swelling may affect a hand, foot, arm, or leg and can feel heavy, tight, or firm.

The lymphatic system normally collects extra fluid and proteins from tissues and returns them to the bloodstream. Surgery, radiotherapy, infection, injury, or a condition affecting lymph vessels or nodes can reduce this drainage. Fluid then remains in the tissues and may gradually cause skin thickening.

Swelling can fluctuate with heat, activity, travel, infection, or time spent with the limb down. Rings, watches, shoes, or sleeves may feel tighter, and movement may become less comfortable.

Ask for assessment by a clinician or lymphoedema therapist. Support may include measured compression, exercises, skin care, movement, and positioning; the combination should be fitted to your limb and medical history.

Keep skin clean and moisturised, protect it from cuts and burns, and treat small breaks promptly according to medical advice. Avoid tight items or forceful massage unless a trained professional has shown you what is safe.

Seek prompt medical help for sudden swelling, redness, warmth, increasing pain, fever, or feeling unwell, as these can indicate infection or another urgent problem. Sudden breathlessness or chest pain requires emergency help.

Ask what caused the lymph drainage problem, whether compression is suitable, which exercises are safe, how to care for your skin, and which changes should be reported quickly.
