Why does lumbar spondylosis cause lower back pain?

Short answer
Lower Back Pain is a common presentation of Lumbar Spondylosis because altered discs and joints can strain the lower-back tissues.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Why it hurts
- Stiff or irritated spinal structures can increase local tissue strain.
- Helpful habit
- Change position regularly and progress activity according to symptoms.
Why pain is felt low in the back
The lumbar spine carries the trunk and moves during bending, turning, and walking. With spondylosis, discs may become less flexible and the small joints may become stiff or irritated. Muscles around the spine can then stay tense as they help control movement. Together, these changes may produce a local ache, stiffness after rest, or pain during lifting and prolonged positions. Lower-back pain can have many causes, so the symptom alone cannot establish which spinal change is responsible.
What you can try
Keep changing position and continue comfortable daily movement instead of staying in bed for long periods. A physiotherapist can tailor mobility and strengthening for the trunk, hips, and legs, while a clinician can review medicines in light of your other conditions. When lifting, turn with your feet rather than repeatedly twisting the lower back, and build activity back in small steps.
When to seek care
Seek an appointment if pain is persistent, limits routine activities, or keeps returning despite sensible self-care. Get urgent medical help for weakness in a leg, numbness around the saddle area, new bladder or bowel difficulty, fever, or severe pain following trauma.
Questions for your doctor
Could my pain be coming from a joint, disc, muscle, or nerve? What activity level is appropriate now? Which exercises can improve support without provoking symptoms? When would imaging or specialist review be useful?

Questions people ask
Is lower-back pain proof of lumbar spondylosis?
No. Muscle, disc, joint, nerve, hip, and other problems can cause similar pain.
Can lumbar spondylosis pain spread?
It can sometimes be accompanied by buttock or leg symptoms, especially when a nerve is irritated; new weakness needs prompt assessment.
