Why does liver metastases cause persistent abdominal pain?

Persistent Abdominal Pain is a common presentation of Liver Metastases. The discomfort may be felt under the right ribs, in the upper abdomen, or sometimes in the right shoulder.

The liver itself has limited sensation, but its outer covering and nearby tissues can respond to stretching or pressure. A growing deposit, swelling, inflammation, or enlargement of the liver can pull on this covering and create a dull ache, pressure, or fullness.

Pain can also relate to blocked bile drainage, irritation of the diaphragm, or involvement of nearby nerves and organs. Its pattern, severity, triggers, and accompanying symptoms help the care team identify the likely cause.

Tell your oncology team when the pain began, where it is located, whether it travels, and what makes it better or worse. Record changes in appetite, bowel movements, urine colour, nausea, fever, or yellowing of the skin.

Your team may review scans, blood tests, and current medicines. Pain relief can include prescribed medicines or treatment aimed at the metastases. Do not add paracetamol, anti-inflammatory medicines, or supplements without checking, because liver function and other treatments affect what is suitable.

Seek urgent help for sudden severe pain, a hard or rapidly swollen abdomen, persistent vomiting, fever, fainting, new confusion, black stools, vomiting blood, or yellowing with worsening illness. Contact your cancer team promptly if pain is steadily increasing or stops you eating, sleeping, or moving.

Ask whether the pain fits the liver findings, which symptoms should trigger an urgent call, how to use the prescribed pain plan, and whether constipation, bile blockage, or another treatment effect could be contributing.
