Why can liver metastases cause jaundice?

Bilirubin is a yellow substance made as old red blood cells are broken down. A healthy liver changes it and sends it into bile. If cancer deposits in the liver narrow bile ducts, press on them, or replace working liver tissue, bilirubin may build up in the blood and yellow the eyes and skin.

Jaundice is a common presentation of Liver Metastases, but jaundice also has other causes that need medical assessment. Along with yellowing, some people notice dark urine, pale stools, itchy skin, nausea, poor appetite, or discomfort under the right ribs.

A clinician may use blood tests to look at bilirubin and liver enzymes, then use imaging to assess the liver and bile ducts. The findings help distinguish whether bile flow is obstructed, the liver is inflamed, or another issue is contributing.

Contact the team managing your cancer promptly if new yellowing appears or becomes more noticeable. They can review medicines, symptoms, blood results, and whether imaging is needed.

Treatment depends on the cause. When a bile duct is blocked, a specialist may consider a procedure to restore drainage. Cancer treatment or symptom treatment may also be adjusted to support comfort, nutrition, and liver function.

Seek urgent medical care for jaundice with fever, chills, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, unusual sleepiness, or rapidly worsening weakness. These features can occur with a bile-duct infection or significant liver dysfunction and should not wait for a routine appointment.

Ask what is causing the bilirubin rise, whether the bile ducts look blocked, and which tests can clarify the problem. You can also ask how to manage itching, appetite changes, nausea, and medicines while the cause is being assessed.
