Why does liver cirrhosis cause abdominal swelling?

Liver cirrhosis can cause abdominal swelling when scarring raises pressure in liver blood vessels and disrupts the body's fluid balance, allowing fluid to collect in the abdomen. This fluid collection is called ascites. Scarred liver tissue can make it harder for blood to pass through the liver. The resulting pressure, together with changes in proteins and hormones that regulate salt and water, encourages fluid to move out of blood vessels and into the abdominal space.

Abdominal Swelling is a common presentation of Liver Cirrhosis. The abdomen may feel fuller or tighter, clothing may become uncomfortable, and weight can rise because of retained fluid. Swelling can also occur in the legs or ankles. A clinician will consider the pattern of symptoms, examine the abdomen, and may use blood tests or imaging to look for fluid and assess the liver. Abdominal swelling has more than one possible cause, so it needs an individual assessment.
