Why does lichen planus cause itchy skin?

Lichen planus is an inflammatory condition in which immune activity affects the skin. Inflammation releases signals that activate nearby nerves, producing itch. Scratching may briefly distract from the sensation, but it can damage the surface, increase inflammation, and create a cycle of more itching. Thickened or darker areas may develop where rubbing continues.

The rash may consist of small, firm, flat-topped bumps or plaques, often with a distinctive surface pattern. Lichen planus can also affect the mouth, scalp, nails, or genital skin, where symptoms and treatment needs differ. A diagnosis requires examination because several itchy rashes can look alike.

Keep nails short and use a cool compress when the urge to scratch rises. Apply a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser and choose loose, soft clothing over affected skin. Avoid new fragranced products, harsh scrubs, and hot water if they intensify the itch.

Arrange a medical review for diagnosis and a tailored anti-inflammatory plan. Do not apply strong prescription creams to the face, folds, mouth, or genital skin without specific instructions, because these areas absorb medicines differently and are easier to irritate.

Seek prompt review if itching prevents sleep, the rash is spreading, skin is cracking or infected, or symptoms involve the eyes, mouth, genitals, scalp, or nails. Urgent assessment is appropriate for eye pain or vision change, facial swelling, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as breathing difficulty.
