Why does leukaemia cause unexplained weight loss?

Short answer
Leukaemia can cause unexplained weight loss when inflammation raises energy needs while poor appetite, illness and treatment make it harder to eat enough.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Why it happens
- Inflammation can raise energy needs and reduce appetite.
- Early support
- Report eating, drinking and swallowing problems promptly.
How weight loss can develop
Cancer-related inflammation can change appetite, taste and the way the body uses energy. Fever and the effort of making new blood cells may increase the body's demands. Nausea, mouth soreness, altered taste, pain or exhaustion can then reduce the amount a person eats and drinks.
Unexplained Weight Loss is a common presentation of Leukaemia, but unplanned weight change has many possible explanations and does not show that a person has leukaemia. The pattern, associated symptoms and medical history help a clinician decide what needs checking.
Support nutrition early
Tell your care team about appetite changes, swallowing difficulty, nausea or clothes becoming looser. A dietitian may suggest small frequent meals, energy-dense foods, nourishing drinks or ways to manage treatment symptoms. Keep a simple record of food, fluids, symptoms and weight trends if your team recommends it; avoid restrictive diets while your body needs fuel.
When to contact your team
Seek prompt medical advice if weight loss is accompanied by persistent vomiting, severe diarrhoea, dehydration, difficulty swallowing, confusion, marked weakness or very little urine. During treatment, report an inability to eat or drink early because support can be adjusted before you become more unwell.
Questions for your doctor
Could my medicines, symptoms or blood counts be affecting appetite and weight? Would a dietitian help? Which foods or drinks are suitable for me, and when should I call about reduced intake or dehydration?
Questions people ask
Does unplanned weight loss confirm leukaemia?
No. Weight loss can follow infection, digestive problems, thyroid changes, stress or other illnesses. A clinician needs to assess the full picture.
What if eating feels difficult during treatment?
Tell your oncology team early. They can address nausea, mouth symptoms or pain and may involve a dietitian to support adequate nutrition.
