Why does laryngitis cause sore throat?

The larynx is at the top of the windpipe, close to the part of the throat used for swallowing. A viral illness, irritants or heavy voice use can inflame this area. Inflamed tissue is more sensitive, so swallowing saliva, talking or coughing can produce a scratchy, burning or raw feeling. Mucus dripping from the nose and frequent coughing may add further irritation.

Sore Throat is a common presentation of Laryngitis. A sore throat can also arise from infections or irritation outside the voice box, so the symptom alone does not identify the cause.

Take regular drinks and choose warm or cool fluids according to what feels soothing. Rest the voice where possible, avoid smoke, and reduce exposure to dry or dusty air. Gargling with warm salt water may soothe some adults and older children who can gargle safely. Get urgent help if you cannot breathe comfortably, cannot swallow fluids, are drooling, or develop rapidly worsening swelling around the neck or throat. Contact a clinician for severe pain, dehydration, a persistent high temperature, a weakened immune system, or symptoms that do not improve as expected. Persistent hoarseness or recurrent throat pain also deserves a review.

Tell the clinician whether the pain began with a cold, voice strain, heartburn, allergy symptoms or contact with smoke. Ask whether they need to examine the throat, test for an infection, or review medicines and inhalers. Clarify which warning signs matter for you and when to return if the discomfort continues.
