Why do keloid scars cause skin lumps?

After a cut, piercing, burn, injection, or operation, the body lays down collagen to close and strengthen damaged skin. In a keloid, scar-building activity continues after the wound has healed. The result is a firm, smooth, rubbery, or shiny raised area that may grow beyond the original wound edges. Keloids can be pink, red, brown, or darker than nearby skin, and they may itch, feel tender, or cause tightness. Their shape and timing help separate them from infection and other skin lumps.

Do not cut, pierce, squeeze, or repeatedly irritate the lump. Protect it from friction and sun, and use a dressing only when it reduces rubbing or when a clinician recommends one. A dermatologist may discuss silicone-based care, injections, pressure treatment, freezing, laser treatment, or surgery, depending on the scar’s site and behaviour. Keloids can return after treatment, so the plan often includes follow-up and a method to reduce renewed scar activity.

Have a new or changing lump examined, especially if it grows quickly, becomes hot, very painful, ulcerated, or starts draining. Seek prompt care for fever or spreading redness, which may suggest infection rather than ordinary scar activity. Arrange specialist advice when a scar limits movement, catches on clothing, affects sleep, or causes persistent itch or tenderness. A clinician can confirm whether the raised area is a keloid, a different scar type, or another skin lesion.

Ask whether the lump extends beyond the original wound, which treatment suits its location and size, and how recurrence will be managed. Discuss expected flattening, changes in colour or texture, treatment sessions, skin reactions, and what symptoms should trigger an earlier review.
