Short answer

Jet lag causes difficulty sleeping because your body clock may still be signalling wakefulness when it is nighttime at your destination.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Darkness, quiet and a regular wake-up time can support adjustment.

A mismatch between clock time and body time

Difficulty Sleeping is a very common presentation of Jet Lag. Your internal rhythm influences when you feel sleepy, when body temperature changes, and when you are most alert. Crossing time zones quickly separates this rhythm from the local schedule. You may lie awake at bedtime, wake unusually early, or sleep lightly because your body still expects a different day-night pattern. Travel stress, noise, alcohol and caffeine can make the mismatch feel stronger.

Supporting sleep at the new destination

Set your watch to local time and aim for a consistent local wake-up time. Get daylight at times that support the schedule you are moving toward, and make the bedroom dark, quiet and comfortably cool. Keep evening meals light if large meals disturb your sleep. Avoid alcohol close to bedtime and limit late caffeine. If you cannot sleep, choose a quiet, low-light activity until you feel drowsier rather than watching the clock.

When to speak with a professional

Contact a clinician when sleep difficulty continues beyond the expected travel adjustment, happens without recent travel, or is affecting mood, work or safety. Get urgent help for thoughts of self-harm, severe confusion, chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting, or a sudden severe headache. These symptoms need prompt attention and should not be attributed to jet lag.

What to ask at an appointment

Ask whether a medical condition or medication could be disrupting sleep, and whether a short-term sleep aid is appropriate for you. If you cross time zones often, ask for guidance tailored to the direction and timing of your travel.

Questions people ask

Why do I wake up very early after travelling?

Your internal clock may be treating the early local morning as a later, more wakeful time from your previous location.

Should I take sleeping tablets for jet lag?

Sleep medicines are not suitable for everyone and can affect alertness. Discuss the choice, timing and safety considerations with a clinician or pharmacist.
