Why does insect bites and stings cause facial swelling?

A bite or sting introduces saliva or venom into the skin. The body may respond with inflammation, causing blood vessels to become leakier and fluid to collect in the surrounding tissue. The eyelids, lips, and cheeks can look particularly puffy because facial tissue is soft and loose. Facial Swelling is a common presentation of Insect Bites and Stings, while facial swelling can also occur for other reasons.

Move away from the insect and remove a visible stinger by gently scraping it sideways with a clean card or fingernail; avoid squeezing the venom sac. Wash the area with soap and water. A cool compress wrapped in cloth can reduce discomfort and swelling. Try not to scratch, as broken skin can become infected. A pharmacist can advise whether an antihistamine, pain reliever, or skin treatment is suitable for you.

Call emergency services immediately for swelling of the tongue, mouth, or throat; difficulty breathing or swallowing; wheezing; widespread hives; dizziness; fainting; or sudden vomiting after a bite or sting. These can be signs of a severe allergic reaction. Seek same-day clinical advice when facial swelling is spreading, the area becomes increasingly hot or painful, there is pus, or symptoms do not begin to settle.

Ask whether the reaction appears local or allergic, and whether you need an allergy plan for future stings. Explain what insect you noticed, where you were stung, how quickly swelling began, and any breathing, skin, or stomach symptoms.
