Short answer

Influenza can cause a runny nose because infection irritates the nasal lining, leading it to swell and produce extra mucus.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Cause
Nasal inflammation and extra mucus.
Self-care focus
Fluids, rest, and gentle nasal care.

What the mucus is doing

The lining of the nose helps trap and clear irritants and germs. With influenza, inflammation can make blood vessels in that lining leak fluid and stimulate mucus production. You may alternate between a dripping nose and blockage as swollen tissues narrow the nasal passages. Runny Nose is a common presentation of Influenza, although a runny nose can also occur with allergies, other viral infections, and irritants. Mucus changing texture during a cold-like illness does not by itself identify the cause.

Comfort measures at home

Drink fluids, rest, and use soft tissues to avoid irritating the skin around your nostrils. Saline nasal spray or drops can moisten and clear the nose; follow the product instructions, particularly for children. A clean humidified room or a warm shower may make congestion feel easier. If you consider a decongestant or antihistamine product, check with a pharmacist first if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, glaucoma, prostate symptoms, pregnancy, or take other medicines. Do not share nasal sprays or tissues.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, blue or grey lips, severe dehydration, or a rapidly worsening condition. Get medical advice if there is severe facial swelling or pain, a persistent high fever, ear pain with marked illness, or symptoms that improve then become worse again. Infants, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with a long-term condition or a weakened immune system should seek advice earlier if influenza symptoms are difficult to manage.

Questions to discuss

Ask whether your symptoms fit influenza, which nasal products are safe with your medical history, and what warning signs matter most for you. Mention the colour and amount of discharge, facial or ear pain, fever, breathing symptoms, allergies, and all medicines or nasal products you have already used.
