Why does influenza cause chills?

When influenza triggers inflammation, chemical signals can tell the brain to conserve heat. Muscles then tighten and relax quickly, producing shivering. Chills may come before, during, or after a fever and can leave you feeling shaky or tired. Most people with Influenza notice chills, but chills can also occur with other infections and non-infectious causes.

Rest, take regular drinks, and wear light, comfortable layers that can be removed if you become hot. A warm drink or blanket may ease the cold sensation, but avoid piling on heavy bedding if you are sweating. If you use a fever or pain medicine, follow the label and check with a pharmacist or clinician if you have a medical condition or take regular medicines.

Seek urgent medical care for trouble breathing, chest pain, new confusion, fainting, blue or grey lips, a seizure, or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange medical advice if symptoms are worsening, you are concerned about dehydration, or you are pregnant, immunocompromised, or living with a long-term heart, lung, kidney, or metabolic condition.
