Why does impetigo cause crusting skin?

Impetigo affects the superficial layers of skin. Small blisters or open sores can release clear fluid or pus. When that material dries, it combines with skin cells and forms a crust, often yellow-brown or honey-coloured. Crusting Skin is a very common presentation of Impetigo. The sores may begin around the nose and mouth but can occur on other exposed areas, and scratching can transfer infection to nearby skin. The crust is part of the sore’s surface; pulling it off can reopen the area and spread germs by contact.

Arrange medical advice because impetigo may need a prescribed topical or oral treatment depending on its extent and location. Wash hands after touching the area, keep nails short, and avoid sharing towels, clothing or face cloths. Clean gently as directed and do not pick or forcibly lift crusts. Covering sores when practical can reduce contact spread. Wash used linens and towels regularly, and keep children away from close-contact activities until a clinician says it is reasonable to return.

Seek prompt care if redness, warmth, swelling or pain is spreading, if there is fever, or if sores are near the eyes. Urgent assessment is needed for marked swelling, severe illness, or rapidly expanding skin involvement. Contact a clinician if a treated area is not improving, if new sores keep appearing, or if someone with a weakened immune system is affected.

Ask whether the sores need a swab or prescription treatment, how to clean and cover them, and when the person can safely share towels or return to school or work. Ask what signs would suggest the infection is spreading and whether close contacts need advice.
