Why does ichthyosis cause scaly skin?

Healthy skin continuously replaces and releases its outer cells. Ichthyosis changes this process: the barrier may be less effective at holding moisture, and cells may cling together or be produced faster than they are shed. Layers of compacted cells then create visible scale. Scaly Skin is a common presentation of Ichthyosis. Scale may look fine and powdery or thicker and plate-like, depending on the type and the body area. It can feel rough, tight or itchy, especially when the skin is dry.

Wash with a mild cleanser and warm water, keeping bathing time comfortable rather than prolonged. Apply an emollient while the skin is damp to soften scale and reduce water loss. A dermatologist may recommend a product with urea, lactic acid or another keratolytic ingredient to loosen retained cells. Introduce such products as directed because they may irritate fissured skin. Do not scrape, pull or aggressively exfoliate scale. Soft clothing and a humidifier may reduce friction and dryness when indoor air is dry.

Book an assessment if scaling is widespread, painful, rapidly changing, or limiting movement around joints. Get prompt help when scale is accompanied by oozing, pus, increasing warmth, marked redness, fever or worsening tenderness. These changes may indicate infection or deeper irritation. A new pattern of heavy scaling in adulthood, especially with other unexplained symptoms, should also be reviewed rather than treated only with stronger exfoliants.
