Why does hypertension cause blurred vision?

The retina is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Raised blood pressure can strain its small vessels over time, and marked changes in pressure can affect vision more suddenly. Blurring may be mild, intermittent or accompanied by headache, depending on the cause. Blurred Vision is a common presentation of Hypertension. However, blurred vision can also result from eye conditions, migraine, changes in blood sugar, medicines or neurological problems, so it should not be self-diagnosed as blood pressure alone.

If you have hypertension, take prescribed medicines as directed and attend planned blood-pressure and eye checks. Record when the blurring started, whether it affects one or both eyes, and any associated symptoms such as headache or eye pain. Do not alter or stop blood-pressure medicine because of blurred vision without medical advice. A clinician can measure your blood pressure, examine the eyes when appropriate, and consider other explanations for the change in sight.

Get urgent medical help for sudden loss of vision, sudden severe blurring, a curtain or shadow across vision, new weakness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, severe headache, chest pain or shortness of breath. These symptoms need prompt assessment whether or not you know you have hypertension. Seek a timely appointment for new persistent blurring even when it is not severe.

Ask whether you need a retinal examination, how often to monitor blood pressure, and whether any medicines or other health conditions could be affecting your vision. Take your home readings and medication list to the appointment if available.
