Why does hyperprolactinaemia cause periods stopped?

Prolactin is a hormone involved in breast milk production. When its level is raised outside pregnancy or breastfeeding, it can reduce the normal release of hypothalamic and pituitary hormones. Those signals normally stimulate the ovaries to mature an egg and produce oestrogen and progesterone. With weaker signalling, ovulation may become infrequent or stop, and the uterine lining may not follow its usual monthly pattern. Periods Stopped is a common presentation of Hyperprolactinaemia. Other possible clues include breast milk discharge unrelated to breastfeeding, reduced sexual interest, headaches or changes in vision, although some people have no extra symptoms.

Tell them about breastfeeding, supplements, stress, exercise, headaches and any vision change. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice.
