Why does house dust mite allergy cause a runny nose?

Mites are tiny creatures commonly found in household dust. Their particles can become airborne when bedding, upholstery, or carpets are disturbed. In a sensitised person, breathing in these particles can set off an allergic response in the nasal passages.

During an allergic reaction, immune cells release chemicals that make the small blood vessels in the nose leak fluid and make mucus glands more active. The result can be clear, watery discharge, along with sneezing, itching, or a blocked feeling.
