Why does Hodgkin lymphoma cause swollen lymph nodes?

Lymph nodes filter fluid and provide a meeting place for immune cells. In Hodgkin lymphoma, abnormal cells can collect within a node and alter the surrounding immune response. The node may gradually become larger and feel firm or rubbery. It is often not painful, although tenderness can occur when an infection or nearby inflammation is also present.

Nodes can enlarge for many reasons, including common infections, inflammatory conditions, and other causes. A swollen node does not by itself identify Hodgkin lymphoma. Location, duration, texture, associated symptoms, and examination findings help guide the next step.

Note where the swelling is, when you first noticed it, whether it is changing, and whether you have recent infection, dental problems, or skin irritation nearby. Avoid repeatedly pressing or massaging the node, which can make the area sore and makes change harder to judge.

Book a clinical assessment for a node that remains enlarged, grows, feels hard or fixed, or appears without a clear explanation. Assessment may include an examination and tests selected for your situation. Only a clinician can determine whether tissue sampling is needed.

Seek prompt medical advice if swollen nodes occur with persistent fever, drenching night sweats, unexplained weight loss, persistent itching, or several enlarged areas. Get urgent help for difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing neck swelling, or severe illness.

Ask which features of the node matter, how long it should be observed, whether nearby infection could explain it, which tests may help, and what changes should prompt earlier review.
