Why does hiv infection cause fatigue?

HIV affects immune cells, and the body may use energy responding to the infection. Tiredness can also be linked to fever, poor sleep, low mood, reduced appetite, anaemia, other infections or medicine side effects. Fatigue is a common presentation of HIV Infection, but fatigue alone cannot identify its cause. A clinical assessment considers your symptoms, health history and appropriate testing.

Keep a brief record of when tiredness began, how it affects daily tasks, sleep quality, appetite, fever and any new medicines. Rest, fluids and regular meals may help while you arrange care, but do not stop prescribed HIV treatment without medical advice. A clinician can check for treatable contributors such as anaemia, infection or medication effects.

Contact a clinician promptly for ongoing fatigue, a sudden decline in energy, fever, breathlessness, unintentional weight loss, persistent diarrhoea or a new rash. Seek urgent care for severe shortness of breath, confusion, fainting, chest pain, or inability to keep fluids down.
