Short answer

Groin Pain is a common presentation of Hip Impingement because crowded hip surfaces can irritate the joint lining and nearby cartilage.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common pain location
The front of the hip or groin.
Typical aggravators
Deep flexion, pivoting and inward rotation.
Useful approach
Modify provoking positions and build movement control gradually.

Why the pain is felt in the groin

The hip is a deep ball-and-socket joint, and its main pain signal is often felt in the groin rather than on the side of the body. With impingement, the ball and socket come into contact sooner or more firmly during certain movements. Deep hip flexion, turning inward, sitting low or pivoting can compress the front of the joint. This may irritate the labrum, cartilage or joint lining and produce aching, pinching or a catching feeling. Pain can sometimes spread to the front of the thigh or buttock. Groin pain has several possible causes, including muscle and abdominal problems, so its location alone cannot identify the cause.

Ways to reduce irritation

Notice which positions bring on the pinch and temporarily reduce those movements without keeping the hip completely still. Choose comfortable chair height, avoid forcing deep squats and take breaks from prolonged sitting. A clinician or physiotherapist can assess hip movement, strength and activity demands, then suggest exercises that improve control without provoking symptoms. Gradual return to sport or heavy activity is safer than repeated testing at the painful end of movement. Use medicines only as directed and consider your other health conditions before taking them.

When to seek care

Arrange clinical review if groin pain keeps returning, limits walking, disturbs sleep or prevents work, exercise or daily activities. Seek urgent care for sudden severe pain after an injury, inability to bear weight, fever with a hot swollen joint, new numbness, marked weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control. These features may point to a problem needing rapid assessment rather than routine exercise advice.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Which hip movements reproduce my symptoms? Could the labrum or another structure be involved? Do I need imaging? Which activities should I modify, and which exercises are suitable? How should I manage pain during work or sport? What change would mean I need a faster review?

Questions people ask

Is every groin pain problem caused by hip impingement?

No. Groin pain can arise from several structures. An examination helps distinguish hip-joint pain from muscle, abdominal or other causes.

Can hip impingement cause pain when sitting?

Yes. Sitting bends the hip, and prolonged or deep flexion can bring the joint surfaces into a position that irritates sensitive tissues.
