Short answer

High-arched feet can cause arch pain because a raised, less flexible arch may concentrate pressure on the foot tissues during standing and walking.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How a high arch changes load

Arch Pain is a common presentation of High-Arched Feet. A high arch may provide less contact with the ground, so pressure can be concentrated beneath the heel and ball of the foot. The plantar fascia, small foot muscles, and other supporting tissues may work harder to steady the foot. A rigid arch can also reduce the foot's ability to adapt to uneven surfaces. Shoes that are narrow, stiff, or poorly cushioned may add to the local stress. Pain may be felt during standing, walking, or activity and can sometimes be accompanied by calluses or discomfort under the forefoot. Arch pain has several possible causes, so an examination is useful if it continues.

Ways to ease strain

Choose shoes with enough room, cushioning, and a shape that does not press against the arch. Reduce activities that clearly increase pain, then return gradually as comfort improves. Gentle calf and foot mobility may help when it does not reproduce sharp pain. A podiatrist or physiotherapist can assess walking pattern, footwear, flexibility, and pressure points; an insert may be suggested when appropriate. Read more in the Arch Pain symptom guide.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment if pain persists despite footwear and activity changes, limits walking, or keeps returning. Seek prompt care for sudden swelling, redness, warmth, inability to bear weight, new weakness, or pain after an injury. People with diabetes, reduced sensation, or circulation concerns should seek advice early when a foot problem appears. The Arch Pain guide can help you describe the location and timing of symptoms.

Questions people ask

Can shoes make high-arch pain worse?

Yes. Narrow, stiff, or poorly cushioned shoes can increase pressure on already stressed foot tissues.

Does arch pain always come from a high arch?

No. Several foot conditions can cause arch pain, so ongoing symptoms deserve an assessment.
