Short answer

A herniated disc can cause lower back pain by irritating nearby tissues, tightening protective muscles, or affecting a spinal nerve.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Pain sources
Irritated tissues, protective muscle tightening, or nerve involvement.

Bending, lifting, prolonged sitting, or sudden movement may increase symptoms.

How the pain develops

Lower Back Pain is a common presentation of Herniated Disc. The disc sits between spinal bones and helps the back move and absorb load. If part of the disc bulges or escapes through its outer layer, the surrounding tissues may become irritated. Muscles around the spine can then tighten as a protective response, adding stiffness and aching. If the disc also contacts a nerve, pain may travel into the buttock or leg, sometimes with tingling or reduced feeling. Pain can vary with posture and activity; bending, lifting, prolonged sitting, or sudden movement may aggravate it. A painful back does not by itself identify the exact cause.

What may help

Change positions regularly and try brief, easy walks if they are comfortable. Avoid bed rest for long stretches, heavy lifting, and repeated twisting while symptoms are active. Heat or cold may feel soothing for some people; protect the skin and stop if it irritates you. A clinician or physiotherapist can tailor movement advice after checking your back, legs, strength, and sensation. Read more about Herniated Disc in the condition guide.

When to seek care

Book an assessment if pain is persistent, keeps returning, limits normal activity, or is accompanied by leg weakness or altered sensation. Seek urgent care for new bladder or bowel control problems, numbness around the groin, severe progressive weakness, or symptoms after major trauma. These signs require prompt examination rather than home monitoring. The Lower Back Pain symptom guide offers further context.

Questions for your doctor

Could a nerve be involved in my pain? Which movements are appropriate now? What findings would make imaging useful, and when should I return if the pain changes?

Questions people ask

Can a herniated disc hurt only the lower back?

Yes. Some people have mainly local back pain, while others also develop symptoms in the buttock or leg.

Should I stay in bed for back pain?

Long periods in bed can increase stiffness; gentle movement within comfort is often more practical.
