Why does hepatitis C cause jaundice?

Short answer
Hepatitis C can cause jaundice when liver inflammation disrupts the liver's ability to process and clear bilirubin from the body.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Visible sign
- Jaundice often affects the whites of the eyes as well as the skin.
- Associated changes
- Dark urine and pale stools can occur when bilirubin flow is altered.
What causes the yellow colour
Bilirubin is a yellow substance made as old red blood cells are broken down. A healthy liver changes it so it can leave the body. If inflammation affects this process, bilirubin can build up and make the whites of the eyes and skin look yellow. Urine may become darker and stools may appear paler.
Jaundice is a common presentation of Hepatitis C, yet it can also result from problems affecting the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts or blood cells. The colour change needs assessment rather than self-diagnosis.
What to do next
Contact a clinician promptly if you notice yellow eyes or skin. They can examine you and arrange blood tests that look at bilirubin and liver function, alongside tests to identify the cause. Note when the colour change began, whether your urine or stools have changed, and any medicines, supplements or alcohol use to discuss at the visit.
Do not use alcohol while you are awaiting advice. Check before taking non-prescription remedies or herbal products, because some may affect the liver or interact with prescribed treatment.
When urgent help is needed
Seek urgent medical care for confusion, extreme sleepiness, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, fever with chills, or rapidly increasing abdominal swelling. Get same-day medical advice when jaundice is new, worsening, or accompanied by persistent vomiting, marked weakness or inability to keep fluids down.
Questions for a clinician
Ask what may be causing the jaundice, which tests are needed, whether your current medicines are safe for your liver, and which changes should lead you to seek care sooner.
