Why does hepatitis C cause fatigue?

The liver helps process nutrients, medicines and waste products. When hepatitis C inflames the liver, the body may have to work harder, and tiredness can become more noticeable. Fatigue is a common presentation of Hepatitis C, but fatigue also has many other possible causes, including poor sleep, stress, anaemia and other illnesses.

Fatigue may feel like physical exhaustion, poor concentration, reduced motivation or needing more rest than usual. Its intensity can change from day to day and does not always match how unwell someone appears.

Arrange a medical review if fatigue is persistent or interfering with work, family life or sleep. A clinician can discuss hepatitis C testing, check liver health and look for other treatable contributors to low energy. Keep a brief note of when fatigue occurs, your sleep pattern, meals, medicines and any new symptoms.

Regular meals, fluids, gentle activity within your limits and a consistent sleep routine may make daily symptoms easier to manage while you wait for advice. Avoid alcohol and do not start supplements or stop prescribed medicines without discussing them with a clinician.

Seek urgent medical care for yellowing of the eyes or skin, confusion, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, or a rapidly worsening illness. Contact a clinician promptly if fatigue comes with dark urine, pale stools, swelling of the abdomen, persistent vomiting or unexplained weight loss.
