Short answer

Heel Pain is a common presentation of Heel Spur. The bony growth may develop where a ligament or tendon attaches to the heel, but pain often comes from irritation in the surrounding soft tissue and the way the foot handles load. Standing, walking, or the first steps after rest may aggravate it.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Pain source
Surrounding tissue irritation and repeated load often matter more than the bone growth itself.
First adjustment
Use supportive footwear and reduce aggravating impact while arranging guidance.

Why a spur can hurt

A spur is a projection of bone that forms at an attachment site, commonly beneath the heel or near the back of it. It may be present without causing symptoms. Pain can reflect inflammation or strain in the plantar fascia, Achilles tendon, or the cushioning tissues around the heel. Tight calf muscles, a sudden increase in walking, unsupportive footwear, or altered foot mechanics can keep loading the area. The location of pain matters: pain under the heel differs from pain at the back of the heel and may have a different source.

Steps that may reduce strain

Temporarily reduce high-impact activity and choose supportive shoes with comfortable cushioning. Avoid walking barefoot on hard floors if that worsens symptoms. Gentle calf and foot stretches may help when performed without forcing pain. A physiotherapist can check walking mechanics, guide strengthening, and suggest a gradual return to activity. A clinician can discuss pain relief or other treatment if home measures do not help. Removing the spur is not automatically required because treating the irritated tissue and load pattern may address the pain.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment if heel pain changes how you walk, continues to interfere with daily activity, or follows a clear increase in exercise. Seek prompt care after an injury that causes inability to bear weight, sudden swelling, marked redness or warmth, fever, or new numbness. These signs need attention because they can indicate an injury, infection, or nerve problem.

Questions for your doctor

Ask where the pain is coming from, whether the spur needs imaging, and which stretches or activities suit your foot. Ask how to choose footwear and how to increase walking gradually once ordinary steps become more comfortable.

Questions people ask

Does every heel spur cause pain?

No. A spur can be seen on imaging without being the source of symptoms; nearby tissue irritation may be more relevant.

Is surgery the first treatment?

Usually, clinicians first address load, footwear, flexibility, strength, and pain before considering an operation.
