Why does head and neck cancer cause difficulty swallowing?

Difficulty Swallowing is a common presentation of Head and Neck Cancer. Depending on the area involved, food may feel as though it sticks, swallowing may hurt, the voice may change, or coughing can happen during meals. Weight loss can develop if eating becomes difficult. These symptoms also occur with non-cancerous conditions, including reflux, infection, and problems with the throat or oesophagus, so an assessment is needed to find the cause.

Arrange a medical appointment promptly for persistent swallowing difficulty. Until assessed, choose textures that feel easier to manage, take small bites, sit upright for meals, and avoid rushing. Keep track of whether solids, liquids, or both cause trouble, and whether food comes back up or triggers coughing. Do not force food through a painful or blocked feeling.

Call emergency services if you cannot breathe, cannot swallow saliva, or feel that food is completely stuck. Seek urgent assessment for choking episodes, repeated coughing with drinks, dehydration, rapidly worsening swallowing problems, or significant weakness from reduced eating and drinking. New persistent swallowing difficulty warrants medical review even when it is not painful.
