Why does hand osteoarthritis cause finger stiffness?

Short answer
Finger Stiffness is a very common presentation of Hand Osteoarthritis because joint changes and irritation make smooth finger movement harder.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why movement feels restricted
Hand osteoarthritis can affect the small joints of the fingers and thumb. The cushioning and joint surfaces change over time, and the joint lining or nearby tissues may become irritated. This can make the hand feel stiff when you first wake up or after holding an object still. Bony enlargement around a joint may further limit its range. Stiffness can make gripping, opening jars, fastening clothing, or typing uncomfortable. Symptoms may vary from one hand or finger to another, and stiffness does not by itself identify the cause.
Making movement easier
Use gentle finger movements through a comfortable range, particularly after warmth has loosened the hand. Spread demanding tasks across both hands, use larger handles where possible, and take brief pauses during repetitive work. A physiotherapist or occupational therapist can suggest exercises, splints, heat strategies, and joint-protection techniques suited to your activities. Avoid forcing a swollen or sharply painful joint.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if stiffness is worsening, affects work or self-care, or comes with persistent swelling or pain. Seek prompt care for a hot, very swollen joint, fever, sudden loss of movement after an injury, marked colour change, or new numbness or weakness.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which hand joints are involved, whether another condition should be considered, which exercises protect function, and whether a splint or hand therapy could help specific tasks.
