Why do haemorrhoids cause blood in stool?

Blood in Stool is a very common presentation of Haemorrhoids. Bleeding is often noticed as bright-red blood on toilet paper, on the outside of stool, or in the toilet after opening your bowels. Internal haemorrhoids may bleed without much discomfort, while external haemorrhoids can also feel sore, itchy, or swollen. Blood may come from several parts of the digestive tract, so its appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Aim for soft, easy-to-pass stools. Drink fluids regularly, include fibre-containing foods such as vegetables, fruit, beans, and whole grains, and go to the toilet when you feel the urge. Avoid prolonged sitting and repeated straining. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a fibre supplement, stool-softening treatment, or a short course of local treatment is appropriate for you.

Arrange a medical assessment for new rectal bleeding, bleeding that returns, or a change in bowel habit. Seek urgent care if bleeding is heavy, stool is black or tar-like, you feel faint, have severe abdominal pain, or cannot pass stool or gas. These warning signs need prompt assessment regardless of whether haemorrhoids are also present.

Ask what examination is needed to find the source of bleeding, whether constipation or medicines could be contributing, and which bowel-habit changes are suitable for you. Mention the colour of the blood, when it occurs, pain, itching, lumps, and any change in stool pattern.
