Why does groin strain cause groin pain?

Short answer
A groin strain causes pain because overstretched inner-thigh muscle fibres and nearby tissues become irritated during movement.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Commonly involved area
- Inner-thigh adductor muscles and tendons.
- Pain triggers
- Sprinting, cutting, stretching or squeezing the legs together.
What the injury involves
The adductor muscles draw the leg inward and help stabilise the pelvis. A sudden change of direction, forceful stretch or repeated effort can overload them. Groin Pain is a very common presentation of Groin Strain. Pain may be felt when running, climbing, changing direction, squeezing the knees together or stretching the inner thigh. Bruising, weakness or a popping sensation can occur with a more substantial injury.
Early care and return
Reduce activities that reproduce the pain and use a cold pack wrapped in cloth for short periods during the early phase. Comfortable walking is reasonable if it does not worsen symptoms. As movement becomes easier, a physiotherapist can guide gradual range-of-motion and strengthening work. Returning suddenly to sprinting or kicking can overload healing tissue, so increase effort step by step.
When to get checked
Arrange prompt assessment if you heard a pop, developed extensive bruising, cannot walk normally, or have marked weakness. Seek urgent care for severe pain after trauma, a visible deformity, numbness, or a painful groin lump. Persistent pain despite reduced activity also deserves an examination because hip and abdominal problems can mimic a strain.
Questions for your clinician
Ask which muscle is involved, whether imaging is useful, and which movements are safe now. Discuss a staged return to sport, exercises for hip strength and flexibility, and the signs that mean you are progressing too quickly.
