Why does gout cause knee pain?

The immune system reacts to the crystals inside the knee. This can irritate the joint lining and produce sudden pain, warmth, tenderness and stiffness. Knee Pain is a common presentation of Gout, although other joint problems can feel similar. An episode may make bending or bearing weight difficult. A clinician may assess the knee and, when needed, examine joint fluid or blood tests to clarify the cause.

Rest the knee, avoid activities that increase pain, and keep the leg comfortably supported. A cool pack wrapped in cloth may ease discomfort for short periods. Take gout treatment only as directed, and do not stop long-term urate-lowering medicine without medical advice. Arrange an assessment if this is a new attack or the diagnosis is uncertain.

Seek urgent medical care for a hot, painful knee with fever, chills, feeling faint or marked illness, because a joint infection can resemble gout. Prompt assessment is also sensible when you cannot bear weight, the pain followed an injury, or symptoms are worsening despite your prescribed plan.
