Why does gonorrhoea cause vaginal discharge?

Vaginal Discharge is a common presentation of Gonorrhoea because infection inflames the cervix and genital tract, producing inflammatory fluid. The discharge may be different from your usual pattern and can occur with burning when passing urine, pelvic discomfort, or bleeding after sex, although some people have no noticeable symptoms.

Gonorrhoea is a bacterial sexually transmitted infection. It can affect the cervix and nearby tissues, where inflammation changes the amount and appearance of genital fluid. Discharge may look yellowish or greenish, but colour and texture cannot diagnose gonorrhoea because other infections and non-infectious causes can look similar.

A clinician can test a urine sample or a swab from the affected area. Depending on sexual exposure, testing may also involve the throat or rectum. Prompt diagnosis matters because untreated infection can spread to the upper reproductive organs and may affect partners without causing obvious symptoms.

Arrange sexual-health assessment if you notice new discharge after sexual contact or have a partner with gonorrhoea. Do not use leftover antibiotics or share medicine. If testing confirms infection, take the prescribed treatment and follow advice about avoiding sex until your clinician says it is safe; recent partners may need testing and treatment as well. Ask whether repeat testing is appropriate.

Seek urgent care for severe lower-abdominal or pelvic pain, fever, vomiting, faintness, or feeling acutely unwell, particularly with discharge or bleeding. These symptoms can indicate infection that has moved beyond the cervix or another urgent condition. If you are pregnant and have suspected gonorrhoea, contact your maternity or sexual-health team promptly.
