Why does glandular fever cause swollen glands?

Nodes in the neck are often noticeable because they drain nearby tissues. Swollen Glands is a very common presentation of Glandular Fever, while swollen nodes can also happen with many other infections and conditions.

Lymph nodes are small immune-system structures that filter fluid and help coordinate a response to infection. During glandular fever, immune activity can make them feel tender, firm or more prominent, particularly around the jaw and neck.

Swelling may occur with a sore throat, tiredness and fever. The glands usually settle as the illness improves, though the pace of recovery can vary and fatigue may last beyond the throat symptoms.

Rest, fluids and simple pain relief may make the illness easier to manage. Use a cool or warm compress on the neck only if it feels soothing, and avoid repeatedly pressing or checking the glands, which can make tenderness more noticeable.

Do not share drinks, eating utensils or toothbrushes while you are unwell. A clinician can advise about returning to strenuous exercise, especially if you have abdominal discomfort or an enlarged spleen is a concern.

Book a medical review if neck swelling is increasing, a gland remains concerning after other symptoms improve, or you have unexplained weight loss, night sweats or ongoing fever. Examination helps distinguish lymph-node swelling from other neck lumps.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly expanding neck swelling, severe weakness with dehydration, or intense pain in the upper left abdomen.
