Why Gestational Hypertension Can Cause Severe Headache in Pregnancy

Gestational hypertension develops during pregnancy and can alter how blood vessels regulate blood flow. These changes may produce a strong, persistent or unusual headache. Headache can also occur with visual symptoms, upper abdominal pain, sudden swelling, nausea or shortness of breath when a pregnancy-related hypertensive disorder is becoming more serious.

A headache in pregnancy has many possible causes, including migraine, dehydration, infection, poor sleep or vision strain. The symptom cannot identify the cause by itself. Checking blood pressure and assessing urine, blood tests and symptoms helps a maternity team decide what is happening.

Tell your maternity team promptly about a severe, new, persistent or worsening headache. Rest in a quiet place while arranging advice, but do not use this as a reason to delay assessment. Record when it started, what it feels like, whether vision has changed and which medicines you have taken.

Use only pain relief that your pregnancy clinician has said is suitable. Do not start blood-pressure medicine or stop prescribed treatment without medical guidance. Your team may repeat blood-pressure checks and monitor you and the baby.

Seek urgent maternity or emergency care for a severe headache that does not improve, sudden vision changes, flashing lights, confusion, weakness, difficulty speaking, chest pain, shortness of breath, severe upper abdominal pain, seizure or fainting. Urgent assessment is also needed with marked swelling or reduced fetal movement. Do not wait for a routine appointment.

Ask what your blood-pressure readings mean, whether urine or blood testing is needed, which warning signs require hospital care and how often you should be monitored. Share your headache pattern, vision symptoms, medicines and any change in fetal movement.
