Why does genital warts cause vulval skin changes?

The skin may develop small raised areas, a rough or cauliflower-like surface, or grouped bumps. Changes can be skin-coloured, pink, or subtly darker or lighter than nearby skin. Itching, irritation, dampness, or tenderness may occur, although some people notice appearance changes without other symptoms. Genital warts can affect the outer vulva and nearby genital skin. Other problems, including dermatitis, fungal irritation, cysts, and normal variation, can also alter vulval skin, so a visual change does not establish its cause.

Have new or changing skin examined by a clinician, particularly if the area is persistent or difficult to identify. Avoid scratching, picking, waxing, or using non-genital wart creams. Gentle washing, careful drying, and breathable underwear can limit additional irritation. Ask about treatment options if the changes are uncomfortable or spreading. During visible symptoms, avoid skin-to-skin sexual contact with the affected area; barrier protection offers incomplete protection because uncovered skin can transmit HPV.

Seek prompt care for a sore that does not heal, spontaneous bleeding, marked pain, rapid change, pus, or fever. Medical assessment is particularly important during pregnancy or with a weakened immune system. A clinician should also review pale, thickened, cracked, or persistently itchy patches, because these patterns may need a different diagnosis and treatment.
