Why does generalised anxiety disorder cause palpitations?

Short answer
Generalised anxiety disorder can trigger the body's stress response, making the heart beat faster or more forcefully and causing palpitations.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why the heartbeat can feel different
When the brain senses threat or prolonged worry, it can release stress hormones that prepare the body for action. This can increase awareness of each heartbeat, produce a racing or fluttering sensation, and make skipped beats feel more noticeable. Palpitations is a very common presentation of Generalised Anxiety Disorder, but the sensation can also have physical causes such as stimulant use, an abnormal heart rhythm, anaemia or thyroid problems.
Symptoms may be more noticeable during worry, after caffeine, nicotine or alcohol, or when sleep has been poor. A clinician can consider the pattern alongside your health history and any medicines or supplements.
What may help in the moment
Sit down if you feel light-headed and slow your breathing: breathe in gently, then make the out-breath longer and unforced. Loosen tight clothing and move away from heat or a busy setting if possible. Note what you were doing, how long the feeling lasted, and whether it started suddenly or built gradually.
Arrange a routine appointment if episodes recur. Support for anxiety may include talking therapy, practical coping strategies, and medicines when they are suitable for you. Do not stop prescribed treatment abruptly without medical advice.
When to get medical help
Seek emergency care for palpitations with chest pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath, new confusion, or a sustained feeling of being very unwell. Get prompt medical advice if the episodes are new, becoming more frequent, happen during exercise, or occur with a known heart condition.
Questions to discuss
Ask whether your symptoms suggest a heart rhythm check, blood tests, or a review of caffeine, decongestants, inhalers and supplements. You can also ask which anxiety treatments fit your symptoms and medical history.

Questions people ask
Can anxiety palpitations happen while resting?
Yes. Worry can activate the stress response even when you are sitting or lying down, making your heartbeat feel prominent.
Should palpitations always be checked?
New, recurrent or changing palpitations deserve medical assessment, particularly when they occur with fainting, chest pain or breathlessness.
